Richard Burnett and Leonard Rutherford were a highly influential old-time duo and major song carriers in South-Central Kentucky. Operating in a shared regional world where old-time string bands, folk, and blues constantly traded tools, their music reflected deep cross-pollination. Rutherford learned his smooth, blues-inflected fiddle style from local musicians, notably including Black fiddler Cuje Bertram. Their 1920s Columbia recordings heavily influenced both country and blues string bands across the South.
