Burl C. Coleman, known as Jaybird Coleman, was an early master of the blues harmonica, recorded in the late 1920s both solo and alongside the Birmingham Jug Band. A World War I veteran who performed on the streets of Bessemer, Alabama, he played entirely in first position, using the harp almost as an extension of his voice in a field holler style deeply rooted in rural work songs.
