Stokes and Sane, formally recording as the Beale Street Sheiks, were a premier acoustic guitar duo operating in Memphis during the 1920s. The duo consisted of vocalist and rhythm guitarist Frank Stokes (born 1888 in Whitehaven, Tennessee; died 1955) and lead guitarist Dan Sane (born 1896 in Hernando, Mississippi; died 1956). Before teaming up, Stokes was a veteran of the Southern medicine show circuit, possessing a booming, theatrical voice. Together, they forged an incredibly tight, highly sophisticated interlocking guitar style.
