Bill Monroe created bluegrass, but he freely admitted the genre had two main roots: Scottish string music and African American blues. Arnold Shultz, a Black fiddler and guitarist from Kentucky, was an important early influence. Monroe's path to bluegrass also ran through the Monroe Brothers with his brother Charlie; the genre evolved through string-band, gospel, and blues crosscurrents over years.
