Ellis Cedell Davis possessed one of the most distinctive sounds in blues history. Crippled by childhood polio, he played guitar left-handed using a butter knife for a slide, resulting in a microtonal, heavily distorted tone. A childhood friend of Robert Nighthawk, Davis recorded in obscurity until Fat Possum brought his raw juke-joint sound to a wider alternative audience in the 1990s.
