Doug Quattlebaum bridged Piedmont blues, gospel, and postwar R&B. After recording for Gotham in 1952, he left the music business to drive an ice cream truck in Philadelphia, playing guitar through its PA system. He was rediscovered by blues historian Pete Welding in 1961 playing in his truck, leading to his acclaimed 1962 Bluesville album 'Softee Man Blues.'
