James A. Lane, known as Jimmy Rogers, was the rhythm guitarist in Muddy Waters's classic band and one of the key architects of the Chicago blues ensemble sound. His crisp, swinging rhythm guitar provided the harmonic foundation for Waters's slide work and Little Walter's harmonica, and his own recordings for Chess ('That's All Right,' 'Walking by Myself,' 'Chicago Bound') were models of the mature Chicago blues style. After leaving Waters's band, he retired from music for many years before making a successful comeback in the 1990s with recordings for Blind Pig and Atlantic. His guitar style established the standard for Chicago blues rhythm playing.
