Luther Allison was a fiery Chicago blues guitarist whose electrifying live performances and passionate playing made him one of the most exciting artists on the blues circuit. He moved to Chicago as a teenager and learned from the masters on the West and South Sides before recording for Delmark and Gordy/Motown. Like Memphis Slim before him, he found greater appreciation in Europe and moved to Paris in the 1980s, where he became a star of the European blues festival circuit. His return to American recording in the 1990s for Alligator Records produced some of the most acclaimed blues albums of the decade. He died of cancer in 1997, just as his American career was reaching its peak. His son Bernard Allison continues the family tradition.
