Solomon Burke was the 'King of Rock and Soul,' a Philadelphia-born preacher and singer whose recordings for Atlantic Records in the early 1960s ('Cry to Me,' 'If You Need Me,' 'Got to Get You Off My Mind,' 'Everybody Needs Somebody to Love') helped establish the template for Southern soul music. His massive physical presence (he often performed seated on a throne) and his deep, gospel-drenched voice made him one of the most commanding live performers of his era. He was a bishop in his own church and the father of 21 children. His 2002 comeback album 'Don't Give Up on Me,' produced by Joe Henry, was critically acclaimed and introduced him to a new generation of listeners.
