James Burke "St. Louis Jimmy" Oden (born 1903 in Nashville, Tennessee; died 1977 in Chicago, Illinois) was a highly respected blues vocalist and songwriter. Moving to St. Louis in his youth, he became deeply embedded in the local piano blues scene, often collaborating closely with the masterful pianist Roosevelt Sykes. In 1941, recording for Bluebird Records, he cut his most famous composition, "Goin' Down Slow." A grim, unflinching narrative about the regrets of a dying man, the song became a widely recognized blues standard, famously covered by Howlin' Wolf and countless others.
