Show 21: The Real Folk Blues Series' Legacy
This one leans into the older, rougher, more tradition-minded side of the music. It is about the blues as lived folk culture: songs carried by memory, locality, and use, not just by the record business.
For this twenty-first episode, I would like to continue the tradition of every seventh episode highlighting the Windy City's extensive blues history. During Episode 7, that began with the Chicago blues artists of the '30s and '40s like Big Bill Broonzy, Jazz Gillum, and Kokomo Arnold, all the way forward to Lester Davenport in the early '90s. The 14th episode featured Howlin' Wolf and his musical mentor, Charley Patton, for two hours, and now for this 21st episode, from 5 to 7 PM, I aim to play a specially selected set of tracks from a collection of albums issued by Chicago's Chess Records from 1965 to 1967. Today's episode is called the Real Folk Blues Sampler, drawing from nine phenomenal blues artists. Up first are five classics from Memphis Slim and another handful from Muddy Waters. Here's "Slim's Blues."
