Show 22: The Library of Congress Blues Tradition
These are the field-recorded bones of the music, caught by collectors before many of the singers ever saw a studio contract. The show matters because it hears blues as document as well as performance: local, unvarnished, and close to the ground.
For today's 22nd episode of the Copacetic Communion Blues Show, I have prepared a unique two-hour show for you where we explore a collection of recordings made between the years 1938 and 1942 by none other than the famed folklorist and ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax. The first folk you'll hear from is artist David "Honeyboy" Edwards. Because the blues isn't just about the sounds you hear during a song, it must come from somewhere else before it can be put into music. The blues comes from life experiences, and it is for that very reason that this particular episode includes both spoken interviews from eighty years ago as well as the music. Up first is Honeyboy's account of how he met Mr. Lomax, followed by a few of his famous tunes.
