Show 25: Louis Jordan's Legacy
This is a Louis Jordan country, where wit, rhythm, and hit-making smarts all pull in the same direction. The show argues that jukebox blues and jump blues were not side attractions, they were central to how Black popular music moved into R&B and rock and roll.
Today's episode will highlight one singular artist and his band, Louis Jordan and his Tympany Five. For the first half hour or so of today's show, we will have a unique format. First I will play Jordan's original tracks, released during the height of his popularity in '42, followed by an alternative version of the same track arranged by the legendary composer and musical director Quincy Jones and recorded by Mercury Records in 1956, over fifteen years past his prime time as king of the jukebox. Up first is "Caldonia," the single from the early '40s, followed by the 1956 Mercury version.
