Irma Thomas (born 1941 in Ponchatoula, Louisiana) is universally recognized as the "Soul Queen of New Orleans." While primarily classified as an R&B and soul vocalist rather than a traditional blues singer, her rich, deeply emotive phrasing is inextricably linked to the Louisiana blues and gospel traditions. Recording for local imprints like Ron and Minit Records in the early 1960s, Thomas worked closely with songwriter and producer Allen Toussaint. She delivered definitive, sophisticated performances on tracks like "It's Raining" and "Ruler of My Heart." In 1964, she recorded a landmark vocal version of "Time Is on My Side," which was famously covered shortly after by The Rolling Stones.
