Jesse Fuller was a one-man band from Georgia who simultaneously played guitar, harmonica, kazoo, hi-hat cymbal, and a homemade bass instrument he called the 'fotdella' (operated with his foot). He spent decades working odd jobs (including as an extra in Hollywood films) before achieving fame in the 1950s folk revival with his self-penned 'San Francisco Bay Blues,' which became a folk standard recorded by Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Peter, Paul and Mary, and dozens of others. His recordings for Good Time Jazz, Prestige, and Folkways showcased a joyful, ragtime-inflected style and an infectious personality.
