Both Spann's birth year and birthplace are subjects of ongoing scholarly dispute. Otis Spann was widely considered the premier Chicago blues pianist of the postwar era and Muddy Waters' most trusted musical lieutenant. His heavy, rolling, barrelhouse-inflected piano was the driving engine behind the Muddy Waters band from 1952 until his death in 1970.
