Originating from Maces Spring, Virginia, the Carter Family is widely recognized as a foundational pillar of early commercial country and folk music, not a pure blues act. The trio consisted of A.P. Carter (born 1891; died 1960), his wife Sara (born 1898; died 1979), and his sister-in-law Maybelle (born 1909; died 1978). Discovered during the historic 1927 Bristol Sessions by Victor Records producer Ralph Peer, their music blended Appalachian folk, gospel, and parlor songs. A.P. was a relentless song gatherer; he frequently shared repertoire and traveled with African American musician Lesley Riddle, which introduced blues structures into their catalog. Maybelle's innovative "Carter Scratch" guitar style (playing melody on the bass strings while maintaining rhythm on the treble) became a universal standard for acoustic guitarists across both country and blues disciplines.
