Wilson Pickett was one of the most explosive vocalists of the soul era, known as 'The Wicked Pickett' for his raw, aggressive singing style rooted in the gospel and blues traditions of rural Alabama. After singing with the Falcons in Detroit, he signed with Atlantic Records and recorded landmark sessions at Stax Studios in Memphis and FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, producing classics like 'In the Midnight Hour,' 'Mustang Sally,' 'Land of 1000 Dances,' and 'Funky Broadway.' His shouting, testifying vocal style drew directly from the blues and church traditions, and his recordings with the Muscle Shoals rhythm section and Booker T. & the MGs helped define the Southern soul sound.
