Show 24: Memphis' WDIA Radio Station's Legacy

WDIA changed the game by putting Black radio at the center of a city sound. These tracks belong together because they show how broadcast culture helped turn local blues into a wider community language in Memphis and beyond.

Host Narration

For today's episode, we will be building off of last week's theme of early Memphis blues with two more hours of mid-twentieth-century Beale Street romps. Because this show and its host have an enormous amount of respect for the history of radio and its many earth-shattering host personalities, I would like to dedicate today's show to Memphis' WDIA radio station and the King of Beale Street, disc jockey of the first Black station, Blues Boy, B.B. King. We'll hear more from and about Mr. King at the 5:30 mark, and now, to commence today's show, I have a glorious track from another one of WDIA's famous disc jockeys. Here's the legendary answer song to Big Mama Thornton's "Hound Dog," it's Rufus Thomas' song "Bear Cat." It starts out wild and just gets weirder from there.
