Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys

Bob Wills was the architect of Western Swing, a genre that drew from jazz, blues, fiddle-band tradition, and medicine-show entertainment in roughly equal measure. Growing up in Texas, Wills played alongside Black musicians and absorbed deep blues feeling; his repertoire was packed with blues standards like 'Milk Cow Blues,' and his band utilized heavy improvisation, swinging backbeats, and blues scales. But Western Swing also grew from Texas fiddle contests, vaudeville, and pop-dance music, making it broader than any single root.
