Show 16: The White American Blues Revival
This chapter listens to white American artists who took up the blues from inside the country’s own folk, country, and revival traditions. The point is not to flatten racial history, but to hear how blues language moved across color lines while still carrying the marks of where it came from.
For today's episode of the CC Blues Show, I will be reviving an old theme from five episodes ago. Whereas Episode 11 featured exclusively the British variety of white bands covering blues standards, this episode aims to give a broad overview of American blues revivalists from around the 1960s who paid homage to the giants upon whose shoulders they unashamedly stand. This episode has a running title of "American Blue-Eyed Blues," off the famous idea of blue-eyed soul musicians which sprung up at nearly the same time. Up first is the formidable frontman Morrison, most recognizably flanked by Manzarek, Krieger, and Densmore, singin' songs from their first and last albums. Here's the Doors singin' "Crawlin' King Snake" and "Back Door Man."
