Show 34: Newport's Legacy in Blues, Pt. 2
Part 2 keeps working the festival angle, where old masters, young listeners, and revival politics all meet. The tracks show Newport as a place where blues history got celebrated, simplified, revived, and reintroduced all at once.
For today's 34th episode of the CC Blues Show, we will be resuming last week's theme of Newport Folk Festival blues. The songs we'll hear today were either sung or recorded during the mid to late 1960s at the nonprofit folk music festival in Newport, Rhode Island. While last week's show highlighted only blues musicians, this episode will include more folk-oriented sounds from contemporary musicians like Joan Baez, Donovan, Pete Seeger, and, most significantly, Bob Dylan. We'll start off today's show with these extraordinary influences. Up first is Joan Baez's cover of "House of the Rising Sun," which she first recorded with Columbia Records in 1960, years before Dylan or the Animals. Here's Baez.
