Malcolm John Rebennack Jr., known as Dr. John or 'The Night Tripper,' was a New Orleans pianist, singer, and songwriter whose music encompassed the full spectrum of the city's musical heritage: blues, R&B, jazz, funk, boogie-woogie, and voodoo-tinged psychedelia. He began as a session guitarist and songwriter on the New Orleans R&B scene of the late 1950s before creating the Dr. John persona, a flamboyant voodoo character inspired by a nineteenth-century New Orleans conjure man. His album 'Gris-Gris' (1968) was a landmark of psychedelic blues, and his 1973 hit 'Right Place Wrong Time' crossed over to the pop charts. He won six Grammy Awards and was one of the foremost interpreters and preservers of the New Orleans musical tradition.
