Show 15: Charley Patton & Howlin' Wolf's Legacy
Charley Patton and Howlin' Wolf stand on different sides of the prewar-postwar divide, but this show pairs them to prove the line between them is shorter than it looks. It is a study in inheritance: Delta showmanship, rough power, and force of personality passing from one giant to another.
For this fifteenth installment of the CC Blues Show, I've gone with an interesting theme. Today's tracklist is comprised of about one hour devoted to two artists, Chester "Howlin' Wolf" Burnett and Charley Patton. These two artists first met when Howlin' Wolf was twenty years old and up and coming, whereas Mr. Patton, nearly twice his age, was already the most popular blues musician in the Mississippi Delta. At this encounter, the young Wolf heard Mr. Patton perform a bevy of powerful songs which made a profound impression on him. Hearing Mr. Patton perform songs like "Pony Blues," all while throwing his guitar in the air, playing it backwards, forwards, and in between his legs, convinced him to become a disciple and a devoted follower of Mr. Patton's. Truly, the showmanship and intensity of Patton translated exactly to Chester Burnett, who became his eponymous character, Howlin' Wolf: loud, snarly, and impassioned. Up first is Howlin' Wolf's "Spoonful," immediately followed by a Charley Patton classic.
