Show 47: Alphabet Blues, Pt. 7: Dust-to-Digital / Earwig / Evidence / Fat Possum

This is the label series at its most wide-ranging, linking archival work, revival documentation, and rough modern recordings. The argument is that blues survives through very different kinds of stewardship: collectors, independents, regional labels, and outfits willing to put strange or stubborn music back in circulation.

Host Narration

I'm your host, Ol' Mr. Read. For today's 47th episode of the Copacetic Communion Blues Show, we'll be resuming our Alphabet Blues series, where I aim to spin, for you, every single blues record label from A to Z. Last week, we had a grand ol' time with the similar reissues by Document Records, and tonight we'll be building off those historical blues recordings with the relatively new label Dust-to-Digital. This record company has a strong catalogue of international folk music from across the world. You're already well aware that I am deeply enamored with the low-fidelity, authentic field recordings that capture the raw, uninhibited sounds of regional cultural art forms. The recordings I'd like to start today's show with come from rural Georgia, from the only man who can be described as a force of nature, a hurricane. Reverend Johnny "Hurricane" Jones had been swaying congregations since the late '50s with distorted guitars, walking bass, clapping choirs, pew stomping, and beleaguered microphones overdriven with the fury of his faith. The excerpts you're about to hear are nothing but the full experience of the Hurricane that hit Atlanta. Up first are Reverend Jones' tracks "I Got Drunk for the Lord," "Train Is Movin'," and then "Devil Don't Understand Moanin'." Here he is.
