Show 57: Love Songs in Blues
Love songs in the blues are never just candy-box songs. This set runs through longing, flirting, betrayal, tenderness, and plain bad judgment to show why the blues is one of the best languages ever built for trouble in the heart.
I'm your host. For today's 57th episode of the Copacetic Communion, we will be celebrating today's holiday of Valentine's Day with two hours of the sappiest, heart-string-tuggingest, and most movingest blues tracks from the previous century. We'll begin in the era of the big bands with Louis Armstrong and Count Basie, then we'll hear some pared-down arrangements, and we'll end right on the cusp of the era of soul and Motown. Up first, we've got an important track by Louis Jordan and His Tympany Five where Louis tells us all straight how it is, issuing an unforgettable warning for us to beware, brother, beware. After that we'll hear the classic Roy Milton track "Big Fat Mama," followed by Big Jay McNeely's stirring ballad called "There Is Something on Your Mind." But now here's Mr. Jordan imploring us to beware.
